At First United Methodist Church, music is at the heart of our worship experience. Through hymns, contemporary songs, and instrumental pieces, we come together to praise God, lift our spirits, and express our faith. Whether you are an experienced musician or simply have a heart for worship, there is a place for you in our Music Ministry.

We welcome people of all ages and abilities to join us in creating music that glorifies God and inspires our congregation.

Our Mission

The Music Ministry at First UMC exists to:

  • Glorify God through worshipful and heartfelt music.
  • Inspire the Congregation to draw closer to God through song.
  • Build Community by connecting people of all ages and backgrounds through the joy of music.

Music is a powerful tool for spiritual growth and connection. We aim to enrich the worship experience, encourage participation, and nurture the talents of those called to lead through music.

Opportunities to Get Involved

Chancel Choir

Our Chancel Choir leads the congregation in traditional hymns and anthems during the 10:45 worship service. Open to all, the choir practices weekly and welcomes new members to join any time, regardless of experience.

  • Rehearsals: Wednesdays at 6:30 PM
  • Where: Choir Room

Praise Band

If contemporary worship is your style, consider joining our praise band! The band also participates in the 10:45 worship service with uplifting, modern Christian music. We are always looking for musicians to join us, particularly instrumentalists.

  • Rehearsals: Thursdays at 6:30 PM
  • Where: Sanctuary Stage

Children’s Choir

Designed for our youngest worshippers, the Children’s Choir is a fun and energetic way for kids to learn about faith through music. The choir performs during special services throughout the year and is open to children ages 5-12.

  • Rehearsals: Sundays at 10:00 AM
  • Where: Children’s Ministry Room

Handbell Choir

For those who enjoy instrumental music, the Handbell Choir is a unique and rewarding way to participate in worship. Whether you’re new to handbells or an experienced ringer, we welcome you to join!

  • Rehearsals: Tuesdays at 6:00 PM
  • Where: Bell Choir Room

Special Music Events

Throughout the year, the Music Ministry hosts several special performances and concerts, bringing together our choirs, bands, and guest musicians to celebrate the seasons of faith through music.

Easter Canata

We have begun working on the Easter Cantata “In Calvary’s Shadow.” It’s a little different from what we’ve done in the past for Easter. This is a Tenebrae Cantata. It has none of the joy of a true Easter Cantata. This story only goes as far as Good Friday.

We will present it to the congregation at the Good Friday (April 18th) Service. Please make plans to attend. It’s going to be a very moving service.

Praise Band

Each month on the 4th Thursday our Praise Band will play at Main Street Coffee House. Come out at 6:00pm and have a cup of coffee on us. This is an opportunity for us to meet the community and our Winter Visitors in particular!

The Southern Plainsmen Quartet is coming back to FUMC Rockport!

Come listen to this group which has the #1 song on the Cashbox Southern Gospel Top 100 list for January 2025! You can come see the Southern Plainsmen Quartet on February 22nd at 6:00. This is a free concert, so mark it on your calendar! You won’t want to miss this one.

Christmas Cantata

  • Date: December 17
  • Details: Join us for a beautiful evening of worship as our Chancel Choir, Children’s Choir, and Handbell Choir present a special musical celebration of Christ’s birth.

Easter Service

  • Date: March 31
  • Details: Celebrate the resurrection of our Lord with powerful worship led by our combined choirs, orchestra, and praise band.

Community Hymn Sing

  • Date: June 9
  • Details: Gather with us for an old-fashioned hymn sing! All are welcome to come, sing along, and enjoy refreshments after the service.
